What can I work on with my Coach?
Example Coaching Topics
Coaching is highly individualized, and every person brings their own unique problems to solve. While no two clients work on things in the same way, the examples below may help give a good idea of the types of things you could work on with your coach.
Task Initiation
Example: You’re having a hard time doing “adulting” tasks like laundry, cooking, writing papers, or meeting deadlines at work. You know exactly what you need to do, but can feel yourself “procrastinating” on these things, despite truly wanting to get them done.
Coaching work: Complete an Executive Functioning (EF) profile to see what EF strengths you have that may help to counteract the EF barrier of Task Initiation. From there, together we problem-solve any new situation that comes up to figure out what’s going on, why, and support you with figuring out and implementing your own unique solutions.
Finding Community
Example: Maybe you’ve always struggled to find people you connect with. Or, perhaps you’re a social butterfly who’s missing the opportunities to connect that came with your last school or workplace. Either way, now you’re ready to find people with shared interests who understand you.
Coaching Work: First, your coach will ask you some questions around your interests & hobbies. How do you like to spend your free time? Then, we’ll work together to figure out what’s the way you like to connect with people:
Do you prefer talking in-person?
Do you like asynchronous communication like texting so that you have a chance to think through your response before sending?
Are online friends better for your social battery?
What types of things do you like to connect with people about?
Once we have a good understanding of what you’re looking for, we’ll work together to find communities that could be a good fit and will give you opportunities to connect with like minded people. If requested, we may even attend an event with you until you’re comfortable on your own.
Forging a New Path
Example: You’ve found yourself on a career path that just isn’t working, and you aren’t passionate about. Maybe you graduated college with a degree in a field you haven’t been able to find a job in, and now you’ve realized you’re ready to pivot. You’re just not quite sure how to do that...
Coaching work: We’ll start by learning more about you and what really interests you – for some people this is through aptitude tests, some people like to just talk it through, some want to just try out some new options until they find the right fit. We might ask things like:
What did you like about your last job? What did you dislike?
If needing money wasn’t a factor, what can you see yourself doing? What would you enjoy (or at least not hate!) doing everyday?
Then, we’ll build the path forward one (metaphorical) brick at a time. Every person ends up taking a highly individualized route through coaching, especially in this area.
Building Structure / Routine
Example: Many of us struggle when we don’t have the natural structure of things like school or work to guide us. You might wake up unsure of what to do with your time outside of work/school.
Coaching Work: We might talk, write, or fill out workbooks to review all aspects of what makes you feel better physically or mentally, and work on a plan for adding more of that into your day. Depending on your prior knowledge and current tools, we might learn about the neurodivergent nervous system or make a loose schedule that could include options for you to choose from each day – you set the direction, we’re just here to guide the process.
Financial Goals
Example: You’ve realized you’ve been spending your paycheck right away, and not saving or working towards your financial goals.
Coaching work: We might review how you’re currently spending, and work together to create financial goals. We’ll continue to check in, and we might continue to problem-solve and adjust those goals over time. We’ll set up systems for tracking your progress and make sure you know what you need to know.
